Gadadharpur/Sainthia: It was 1.53 am on Monday morning when the Kolkata bound Uttarbanga Express from Cooch Behar stopped at Gadadharpur station, 7 km away from Sainthia. It stopped because the line to Sainthia was not clear. "It was an unscheduled stop as the train had not been given the green signal,” said Pramod Kumar, station manager at Gadadharpur.
He and others at Gadadharpur told the media that the train driver Madhav Chandra Dey and his assistant Nirmal Mandal were both perfectly fine - as was the train. It departed at 1.55 am.
At 2.04 am it rammed Ranchi-bound Vananchal Express at Sainthia station, killing 69 people and injuring more than 150.
What happened in those nine minutes across a 7 km stretch? Immediately after leaving Gadadharpur, the train began accelerating at an alarming rate.
Two km outside Sainthia, there stands a large sign where the track curves, setting trains a speed limit of 30 km per hour. The Uttarbanga completely ignored the sign. It went on to ignore every signal thereafter.

Jagdalpur: Today the Maoist victimized Eleven persons including 2 CRPF personnel. 5 special police officers and 4 villagers in a powerful and mine blast in between Bhejji and Injerum under Konta area of Dantewada district. The naxals snatched away 5 rifles and 200 live catridges from ill-fated cops and the tractor carrying the cops have also been damaged badly. Three SPOs have also been injured seriously in this blast who have been rushed to Konta hospital for treatment.
According to police sources the cops were returning back for Injerum base camp from Bhejji after safe escort of ration meant for Bhejji. On their way back, the cops asked a tractor driver for lift. At about 12:30 afternoon the naxals made a powerful landmine blast over the said tractor. The blast claimed the lives of two cops of CRPF 111th Battalion namely sub-inspector Om Prakash and constable Atmaram, 5 SPOs namely Panda Joga, Kawasi Kanna, Soyam Lachha, Madkam Hirma and Madkam Ramesh; and 4 villagers namely Sodhi Ganga, Nagesh Rao, Buchha Soma and tractor driver Buchha Hira to a total of 11 persons. Three SPOs Sarlam Joga, Puran Ganga Jode Kishore have also been injured in this blast, who have been escorted to Konta hospital, where their conditions have been stated serious.
The naxals snatched away 5 rifles and 2 catridges belonging to cops. This is not the first instance when the naxals targetted the grouped cops riding over any four wheeler. It is again to recall for safety point of view the cops deployed in naxal areas have been instructed to avoid four wheelers, but the thirsty and hungry cops tired with the foot march for hours together usually try to find out any vehicle passing through their way and ride over it to get brief relief and relaxations, but in most of such instances the ill fated cops have been victimized by naxals also in the past.
